Last plea from tamar valley

Where: Parliament House Lawns, Hobart.

Its crunch time  in State Parliament for the pulp mill. Local businesses and
industry spokespeople from the heart of the Tamar Valley will be making a
final plea asking the Members of the   Legislative Council to protect their
livelihoods and say no to Gunns' proposed pulp mill this Wednesday.

The Members of the Legislative Council need to be reminded that the pulp
mill will be an environmental and economic liability for Tasmania.

We need you to come to  Parliament  House lawns this Wednesday from
12:30 todemonstrate the wide-spread community opposition to the proposed pulp mill and to support the individuals that will be speaking out to save their businesses in the Tamar
Valley.

Speakers include: John Hammond, Peter Whish  Wilson, Quentin Wolfhagen, Lucy Landen Lane, Peter Hanning and others.

If you are a business owner in the Tamar Valley area and would like to call on the Members of the Legislative Council to  say no to the pulp mill on Parliament House Lawns on Wednesday please contact Gemma Tillack as soon as possible.

CANDLE AND TORCH VIGIL

When: 6pm to 8pm Wednesday 29th August

Where: Parlaiment House Lawns, Hobart.

We need as many people as possible to stay in Hobart and take part
in a torch and candle vigil on Parliament House lawns on Wednesday night. At
6pm we will be screening the pulp mill film Tasmania's Clean Green Future:
too precious to pulp? After the screening a torch and candle lit procession
will circle Parliament House.

LOBBYING MEMBERS OF THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

It is vital that the Members of the Legislative Council are approached by
members of the community and Tasmanian business owners in the lead up to
their vote on Thursday. If possible, please stay in Hobart over night so
you can lobby the MLCs around Parliament House on thursday.

PULP MILL PROCESS - PERMITS TO POLLUTE

You are invited to a free public forum
hosted by Tasmanian Greens Pulp Mill spokesperson Kim Booth MHA and
Tasmanian Greens Member for Lyons Tim Morris MHA.
The Tasmanian Greens are standing up for the community and fighting with you
against this obnoxious pulp mill proposal every step of the way in
parliament and we will never give up. In keeping with one of our key aims
which is to promote open and transparent government we are holding the
following forum:

sham that the parliamentary process has become.

Why the pulp mill effluent will move like an oil slick and why that's bad

   - Why the "Pulp Mill Permit" being introduced to parliament on August
   21st is a farce and simply a motion that will see scrutiny and debate
   drastically reduced.
   - About the licences to pollute that the Lennon Labor government wants
   to give to Gunns Ltd for their proposal.
   - How Labor has gagged parliamentary debate on the pulp mill, with the
   Liberals supporting them all the way.

Observe how Premier Paul Lennon changes his tune from his Ministerial
Statement on the Pulp Mill, October 26 2004.

*"Once we have a proponent I intend to ask the Lieutenant-Governor to make
an order for any pulp mill proposal to be declared a Project of State
Significance to allow unfettered public and parliamentary scrutiny. This is
a ruthless process. The commission process is inquisitorial and thorough.
...The entire assessment process is run by the RPDC rather than a local
council.
...Because of its scale, a Project of State Significance operates outside
normal land use planning provisions, but it is no less open and transparent
in its process. It is more open, more transparent and more inclusi ve. It
involves full public consultation and the process must be approved by the
two Houses of Parliament. By its nature it is time-consuming, much slower
than orthodox planning decisions. It is conducted by the Resource Planning
and Development Commission, which I remind members is an independent body.
...Let us be clear. Nothing could happen and nothing would happen regarding
another pulpmill development in this State until we set the ground rules for
the mill to be established."*

What have we seen since then? The resignation of RPDC pulp mill panel
members in protest at government interference, and then the abandonment of
the RPDC process by Gunns and the government. Premier Lennon bulldozing
through pro Pulp Mill legislation and a hamstrung assessment process by
Sweco Pic that saw the compromised consultants spend just 48 hours in the
Tamar valley 'assessing' the pulp mill.
How has it come to this?
What's happened to democracy in Tasmania?
What about the rights of the people? The right to clean air, water and community safety?
